HERE'S TO THE LADIES:
A SALUTE TO GREAT LADIES IN SONG

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Swoon we did on our night out with Marieann Meringolo, who sang a truly personal, passionate tribute to divas we all know and love in her Women's History Month tribute, "Here's to the Ladies: A Salute to Great Ladies in Song".

It was an intimate and memorable evening with one of cabaret's most prominent performers -- and an out lesbian. Meringolo even came out into the crowd and seduced a few women in the audience with love songs, and told us heartfelt stories in between songs and medleys. She left us on our feet, cheering for more.

Sherri Rase of QonStage.com said it the best in this preview article! "The sort of community-building that OP.LYNX specializes in is the best way to make sure we sisters can do it for ourselves." Read the online article posted March 3, 2009.

LYNX LOUNGE / HOMO COMICUS VIII:
Girls Gone Hilarious!
Women's Night of Comedy

Thursday, February 5, 2009

The coldest night of the year, with wind chills in the minus, was no obstacle to our women's night of comedy, one of our favorite annual traditions. A crowd of almost 200 came ready to laugh and our talented roster of ladies of laughter delivered.

Sisterhood is powerfully funny when these deliriously wild and witty leading ladies of stand-up comedy took the stage, including Marga Gomez, Lisa Kaplan, Kate McKinnon, and Anne Neczypor. Hosted by high priestess of hilarity Becky Donahue.

Meet the players: Marga Gomez is one of America's first openly Queer comics seen on LOGO and Comedy Central. Lisa Kaplan is a veteran of LOL Tour: Lesbians of Laughter. Kate McKinnon is a cast member on "The Big Gay Sketch Show" on the LOGO Network. Anne Neczypor has been featured on "Hot Gay Comics" and was nominated for an NYC MAC award. Becky Donahue's TV appearances include Comedy Central's Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, Premium Blend, Shorties Watchin' Shorties and A&E's 15 Films about Madonna.

Women's Night: Shaken & Stirred
Leo Bar at Asia Society & Museum

Friday, November 21, 2008

Hosted by Asia Society, OP.LYNX, FSIX, Astraea & Q-Wave

Asia Society was a most gracious host to OP.LYNX for Women's Night at Leo Bar Networking Mixer. A record turnout bundled up for the February-like night chill to join over 500 women! The most gratifying observation for all the partnering organizations has been just how consistently diverse in age, ethnicity, style, profession, interest and expression the attendees are at this twice-per-year Asia Society women's mixer. Join us for the next women's mixer scheduled for Spring 2009.

Leo or Leogryph, the symbol of Asia Society, is a fierce, mythical beast with the anatomy of a lion and a griffon. It is known as a figure of protection in Asia.

Founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller 3rd, Asia Society is an international nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational organization that fosters communication and understanding between the Asia-Pacific region and the US.

Currently on view: Art and China's Revolution is a groundbreaking exhibition focused on three of China's most tumultuous and catastrophic decades, including the Cultural Revolution. Bringing together large-scale oil paintings, ink scroll paintings, artist sketchbooks, posters and objects from everyday life -- many seen for the first time in the United States -- the exhibition is a comprehensive, in-depth presentation of this historical period. Exhibition runs through January 11th.

Quarterly OP.LYNX & NewFest
Filmmaker Brunch Series

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Event Community Partner: Q-Wave

OP.LYNX, NewFest & Q-Wave presented the final QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES of 2008.

Thank you to all who braved the rain and came from far and wide to give Filmmaker Alice Wu a truly warm reception! We had a standing-room only crowd, so extra thanks to those who chose to stand for the entirety of the feature film.

Winner of the CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) Screenwriting Award, SAVING FACE is a romantic comedy about a daughter struggling to understand her mother's heart, which ultimately allows her to understand her own. It is the story of unspoken loves, contemporary and cultural taboos, and the journey of two women towards living their lives honestly.

Following the screening, Filmmaker and NewFest Board Member Lesli Klainberg (pictured above, bottom row, right) engaged Alice Wu (pictured above, bottom row, middle) in some great storytelling about how Alice broke out of the world of computer science to make this film, epitaphs from what it was like to work with gifted actor Joan Chen and other great tidbits from the making-of process.

Alice Wu was born and raised in San Jose, California and is now based in NYC. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science at Stanford University. She directed the short film TRICK OR TREAT (2002) before directing her first feature, SAVING FACE (2004).

Lesli Klainberg is a producer and director of a wide variety of documentaries and specials for network and cable television and the owner of Orchard Films. Recent film projects include The Independent Film Channel mini-series, INDIE SEX, which explores different aspects of sexuality in cinema, FABULOUS! THE STORY OF QUEER CINEMA, which explores the history of American independent gay and lesbian cinema and IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN, a documentary about women in independent film, which premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film festival.

NewFest is New York City's premier LGBT film organization. Through annual film festival and year-round programming, NewFest showcases international, US, and local film, video, and other media, fostering a greater sense of awareness and community among LGBT and LGBT-friendly audiences. www.newfest.org

Quarterly OP.LYNX & NewFest
Filmmaker Brunch Series

Saturday, August 9, 2008

OP.LYNX presented the third in our QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES for 2008. It was a sunny, more-like-early-June August afternoon and the open deck was the perfect setting for a casual get-together.

We presented a wildly diverse selection of lesbian shorts from talented local and international filmmakers -- from the sweet sentiment of Erin Greenwell's Overnight Book to Swedish filmmaker Mandra Waback's moving short Doors and Christy Wegener's sharp Long Ago, to the rough and raucous riff raff of Katrina del Mar's Surf Gang and Leah Meyerhoff's Eternal Flame (see filmmaker bios and film synopsis below). Robin Pickering, guitarist from the band Triple Creme brought us their latest music video as a late addition to the program.

The Q&A, which was moderated by Kerry Weldon, Filmmaker and Administrative Director of NewFest, was an open, first-hand account of the state of independent filmmaking for women, specifically lesbians.

About the Filmmakers & Films:
Erin Greenwell graduated with a BFA in screenwriting from Tisch School of the Arts (NYU) and recently received an MFA in Writing and Directing Fiction through City College's Media Arts Program. Erin formed Smithy Productions, a production company, with the aim to house various talents from the lesbian/independent art community under the umbrella of narrative/documentary storytelling. OVERNIGHT BOOK is about a passionate teenage misfit, Mary, and a washed up adult writer, Bobby, who meet in a dingy diner over Christmas break. Drawn to a younger version of himself, Bobby will help Mary craft her James Joyce proposal in an ambling journey through "Any Town", USA. It is this night Mary will find new courage and Bobby will write his overnight book.

Mandra Waback was born in 1970 in Stockholm, Sweden. She graduated from the Swedish School of Photography in 1989 and immediately moved on to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 1997 she got selected to the Dutch Film and Television Academy, where she graduated in 2001 as a film director. Mandra is currently mixing various disciplines in her work, both as a visual artist and as a film director. DOORS is centered around a hallway in an anonymous, worn-out building with two doors opposite each other. A young girl and a woman, both lonely and needy. But who is dependent of who?

Christy Wegener is a writer, director, and producer. Her most recent short film was acquired by MTV Networks and has screened at more than 40 film festivals worldwide. She earned a Masters of Arts degree in screenwriting from the University of Southern California and is the recipient of a film grant from the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. Christy is finishing a feature-length script with plans to go into production in the summer of 2009. LONG AGO is about a hairstyle that won't go away that mirrors the difficulty of moving on after a
romance has ended.

Leah Meyerhoff was born in San Francisco. She graduated with Honors from Brown University with a Bachelor's degree in Art-Semiotics. She spent the following year studying film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she also taught at the undergraduate level and founded an art gallery. Leah is currently studying on a full scholarship at NYU, where she is pursuing a Master's degree in Film. Leah has also completed several music videos and is currently in pre-production on her first feature film UNICORNS, a Sundance Lab finalist executive produced by Allison Anders (GAS FOOD LODGING). ETERNAL FLAME welcomes you to a world where mermaids dance with octopi, fire breathers rule the night, and the Statue of Liberty knows how to sing. Girls are buried up to their necks in sand while boys do back flips and dazzle dancers perform in a puppet show without strings.

Katrina del Mar is an art and commercial photographer whose work is variously described as being beautiful, luscious, romantic and stylistically eclectic. From rock stars to ordinary kids; punk rockers to equestrians, on location or in the studio, her work transcends the ordinary. Katrina jumped into moving pictures in 99 with Super 8 short film Gang Girls 2000, inviting comparisons to the legendary Kenneth Anger. SURF GANG is a 20 minute experimental narrative film about the turf war that erupts when a gang of tough surfer girls travel out of their home territory of working class Rockaway Beach and arrive in the luxurious Hamptons. Katrina received a Fellowship in Video from the New York Foundation for the Arts for her work on this film.

Girls Gone Hilarious for Pride!
Women's Night of Comedy

Thursday, June 26, 2008

LYNX LOUNGE / Homo Comicus: Girls Gone Hilarious! VI was yet another wildly successful near sold-out event! We had a good many women who were visiting for Pride weekend, as well as many LYNXers who have made this event a 'must' on their laugh-therapy calendar.

The special PRIDE MONTH edition of Girls Gone Hilarious featured: (pictured above left to right) Judy Gold, Michele Balan, Sandra Valls and Emcee Poppi Kramer.

Judy Gold: The Aristocrats, HBO's Sex & the City, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, VH-1 All Access, Comedy Central, Tonight Show with Jay Leno and author and star of "25 Questions for a Jewish Mother." Michele Balan: Finalist on NBC's last Comic Standing (and the last woman standing), Comedy Central, Logo, Comics Unleashed, Underground Comedy Fest and Kings and Queens of Comedy. Sandra Valls: Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, Hollywood Improv, London's Comedy Camp, Showtime's "Latin Divas of Comedy," Comics Unleashed and HBO Comedy Festival. Poppi Kramer: Comedy Central VH-1, NBC's "Biggest Loser" and movies "Dummy" and "Slippery Slope."

Photos from the event:

(Top to bottom, left to right) Emcee Poppi Kramer told us the inside scoop on being a contestant on The Biggest Loser. We learned about Sandra Valls' aversion to lesbians with cats. Michele Balan, in good form, had us crying with laughter. We couldn't get enough of Judy Gold's Jewish mother escapades. The 95% all-women and near-sell-out crowd got their fill of lesbian pride. Women's Night: Shaken & Stirred
Leo Bar at Asia Society & Museum

Friday, May 16, 2008

Hosted by Asia Society, OP.LYNX & FSIX

Women's Night at Leo Bar, Asia Society & Museum has become a bi-annual favorite for OP.LYNX and our friends at FSIX, as well as our colleagues at Asia Society. Over 350 women braved the rain to enjoy an elegant mixer with women of like-mind. The museum tours were each filled to capacity, taking in the current exhibit: The Shape of Things: Chinese and Japanese Art from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, 3rd Collection.

Our fun question for the evening was "What is your favorite lesbian film or TV show -- or favorite "fanatasy" lesbian film/TV show (ex: Charlie's Angels)?" An unexpected delight, is that most of us went home with a list of movies to add to our Netflix que.

Thank you David Reid and Ashley Eiler of Asia Society for making us feel at home.

This month, a very exciting collaborative team came together -- OP.LYNX, NewFest, Punkmouse, Queer Black Cinemas & Afterellen.com -- in presenting this event as an official program of Q-Me Con 2008 (Queer Media & Entertainment Conference).

The sold out event was a nice mix of locals and visitors from as far away as Toronto, who were in town for Q-Me Con. Brunch was an all-out feast with enough variety to please both the carnivores and vegetarians, coffee fiends and tea drinkers. It was a beautiful sunny day for chillin' on the top floor outdoor deck.

LESBIAN WEBISODES: New Wave Storytelling meets Multi-Platform Marketing focused on the unchartered territory of Webisodes. We screened webisodes from award-winning filmmakers Angela Robinson (The L Word, D.E.B.S., Girl Trash), Debra Wilson (First Take) and writer/comedian Rebecca Drysdale (The Time Traveling Lesbian). Plus, the winners of the Q-Me Con 2008 Women's Summit & AfterEllen.com Webisode Contest.

OP/LYNX Night
@ BEEBO BRINKER CHRONICLES

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Thank you to all who joined the OP.LYNX Off-Broadway outing to BEEBO BRINKER CHRONICLES. It was great fun, and what a performance!

Whether you were one of those young budding lesbians who hid Ann Bannon's books from your parents or a youngin' and a newbie to the lesbian pulp fiction genre of the 1950s, the play adaptation of Beebo Brinker Chronicles has already become a piece of historical theater.

Fueled by sex and booze, BEEBO BRINKER CHRONICLES follows the lives and loves of four friends in 1950's Greenwich Village. The initial production sold out its entire run within days. Tony Award winner Lily Tomlin and her Emmy-winning collaborator and partner Jane Wagner joined the producing team for this run and already garnered a 2008 GLAAD Media Award in March -- just another indication of the stardust quality of this performance. See an interview with Lily and the Directors of Beebo on Good Morning America: www.abcnews.go.com

Many of us took a stroll over to the Post-Show Reception at the lovely HK Lounge and sampled from the appetizer menu. The women of HRC were also having a group outing and one of the Producers of Beebo Brinker joined us as well.

Girls Gone Hilarious!
Women's Night of Comedy

Thursday, April 3, 2008

LYNX LOUNGE / Homo Comicus: Girls Gone Hilarious! is officially a LYNX tradition! The night certainly did not disappoint.

This fabulous laughter-filled event featured headlining L.A.-based out comic Sabrina Matthews (pictured top row left) ("Comedy Central Presents Sabrina Matthews," semi-finalist on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and starring role in the hit 2006 documentary "Laughing Matters...More!") in a rare NYC appearance.

Sherry Davey (top right) (Nick At Nite's "Search for America's Funniest Mom II" and Comedy Central's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and "Premium Blend") was irresistibly hilarious with her high volume Brittish accent and giggly humor. Gloria Bigelow (bottom row left) (MC of the NY Comedy Expo opening for the finalist of the National Laugh Across America Competition) left us wanting more. Veronica Mosey (VH1's "Boys Will Be Girls" & Featured Comedian on Lifetime's "Girls Behaving Badly") was all sassy sarcasm.

Jackie Monahan (top row middle) (LOL Tour) was our hostess and made us feel guilty for laughing at her very un-PC one-liners and kept us on a laugh track all night.

Leisurely with LYNX 2:
The Immigrant, Radical and Notorious
Women of Washington Square

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating Women's History Month with OP.LYNX and Manhattan Historian & OP Member Joyce Gold. We had a pleasant (though chilly) leisurely 2-hour walking tour through Washington Square and heard fascinating stories about the women who have lived there.

Perhaps in no other six blocks on earth have so many notable women lived and achieved for the last 150 years. Throughout the years, it has seen an unparalleled variety of women -- working class, gentry, radical, literary, academic, theatrical, convict, and immigrant. Eleanor Roosevelt, Edith Wharton, Louisa May Alcott, Lila Acheson Wallace, Paulette Goddard, Emily Roebling, Bella Abzug, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Ida Tarbell, Emily Post, and even the woman who invented the kewpie doll, all shared this famed New York neighborhood.

Joyce then joined the group for lunch as we warmed up with won ton soup and tea (for starters) at Wild Ginger, a wonderful Thai restaurant on Grove St (we highly recommend it!). Stay tuned for our next walking tour...

Filmmaker Brunch Series

Saturday, February 9, 2008

NEW! Now you can listen to a PODCAST of the entire Q&A with Kerry Weldon and Leslie Klainberg. Click on the above PODCAST icon to be taken to our ITunes page where you can subscribe to OP Podcasts and listen to the Filmmaker Brunch.

OP.LYNX & NewFest presented the first in our QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES for 2008. We had a full house, our largest turnout so far in the series.

Director/Producer Lesli Klainberg hosted the screening of IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN. Celebrating women in independent film, the documentary focuses on innovative and diverse female directors, writers and actors who have challenged and transformed the portrayal of women on screen. IN THE COMPANY OF WOMEN explores women's views, sensibilities and concerns on screen and behind the scenes, and chronicles the story of the women who have participated in filmmaking outside of conventional Hollywood limitations.

On-camera interviews include: Allison Anders, Lisa Cholodenko (High Art), Patricia Clarkson, Jodie Foster, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kasi Lemmons, Rebecca Miller, Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), Rosie Perez, Parker Posey, B. Ruby Rich, Susan Sarandon, Tilda Swinton, Lili Taylor, Marisa Tomei and more.

Klainberg is a award-winning producer and director of a wide variety of documentaries and specials for network and cable television, and is the owner of Orchard Films. Other film credits include producing the Sundance award-winning documentary "Paul Monette: Brink of Summer's End" about the influential deceased gay author of Becoming A Man, and directing/producing "Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema".

Continental Brunch included fresh bagels, muffins and pastries and a small selection of fruit, as well as coffee, OJ and $5 Bloody Marys and Pomegranate Mimosas. Next time we will have more variety and fewer carbs, thank you for your feedback. And thanks to Cattyshack for generously hosting us!

The Epicurean LYNX at Villa Mosconi
Dining Social for Women

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Thank you to all who took a culinary excursion to the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy for our first Epicurean LYNX Dining Social of 2008. Winter in the city means unhurried conversation and warm, hearty home-made cooking. The indoor garden was festive and warm, the service was gracious, the food of course was sumptuous and the atmosphere friendly and open. Overheard were a few spin-off social groups that already had plans to go golfing and play poker!

Special thanks to Vittoria Repetto for recommending Villa Mosconi and coordinating with the owners, and thanks to Dale Siegel for additional coordination.

Villa Mosconi is located at 69 MacDougal St. www.villamosconi.com

Hosted by Asia Society, OP.LYNX & FSIX

Thank you to all who continue to make our favorite event a destination for women. Asia Society has become a home for OP/LYNX and we look forward to Women's Night for months. We made a new record attendance at 375. Thank you Asia Society and the women of FSIX.

Women on a Mission:

Lesbian Pioneers, Mavericks and Mavens in a Mastermind Session about Leadership

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Presented by LGBT-to-B Business Committee of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce
Co-produced by OP.LYNX

There are way too many thank you's due than we have space to list here! Know that many wonderful individuals and organizations took part in the magic that was WOMEN ON A MISSION, and all very well appreciated.

Leaders representing private sector small business, non-profit, corporate diversity and politics came together to speak from their experiences and from their hearts in this inspiring and informative panel. And many community leaders were in the audience.

In the context of the LGBT Community, lesbians in positions of leadership are still very much in the minority compared to our gay male counterparts. Our panel address a number of key reasons why this is and the implications of this relative invisibility.

Panelists:

OP Member Stephanie Blackwood (pictured top row left) Founding Partner, Double Platinum; Associate Publisher & Vice President, The Advocate, 1991; Board Member, Astraea; Advisor to International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and Live Out Loud. Read more...

Ana Oliveira (top row middle) President and CEO, The New York Women's Foundation; Former Executive Director of GMHC; Profiled in Newsweek (2005) as "America's Best," about individuals using their extraordinary vision on behalf of others. Read more...

Judith Turkel (top row right) Partner, Turkel Forman & de la Vega LLP; Founding Board Member, LeGal; President of the Board of Directors, LGBT Community Center 1995-2000; Current Board Co-Chair of SAGE. Read more...

Cuc Vu (bottom row left) Chief Diversity Office, HRC; former Immigration Campaign Manager for the Service Employees International Union; U.S. Department of Labor; Board Member and volunteer for the National Immigration Forum, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance. Read more...

Moderated by Jennifer Brown (bottom row middle) (Metro NY Regional Council of Out & Equal). Read more...

Special Guest Host: Heather Matarazzo (bottom row right) (Out lesbian actor; Starring in LOGO's "Exes & Oh's", Film Debut: "Welcome to the Dollhouse").

The Reception afterwards was abuzz with continued discussion, resource sharing and gratitude for the energy that convened that evening. Our Special guest host Heather Matarazzo, our panelists and other community leaders in attendance convinced us that this event should continue as a series, and we agree.

The event was held at the amazing New World Stages. Comprising five state-of-the-art theaters, on two stories below street level, New World Stages is a subterranean industrial wonder, and sits on land formally occupied by the old Madison Square Garden. www.newworldstages.com

LYNX LOUNGE: Girls Gone Hilarious!
Women's Night of Comedy 4

Thursday, November 1, 2007

LYNX LOUNGE: Girls Gone Hilarious! has become a LYNX LOUNGE favorite! Thank you to all who were able to squeeze into the sold our 7:30pm show! Everyone on line for the second show got a sneak peak at what they could expect to look like like after an hour and a half of non-stop fun assault.

RACHEL FEINSTEIN (pictured 2nd row left) (from Comedy Central's "Premium Blend" and "Fresh Faces of Funny" and the Montreal Comedy Festival) saved the day and filled in as our host after MARION GRODIN had to very suddenly cancel.

Our line-up of fabulously funny females included LISA KAPLAN (2nd row right) (LOL Tour: Lesbians of Laughter) and MIMI GONZALEZ (2nd row middle) (Producer of a weekly women's comedy show in LA, "Women with Balls"; Emcee for the 10th Annual Women's Event at Pier 60/Chelsea Piers to benefit the LGBT Center on Nov 3rd). Headliner, KATE CLINTON (above left) (too many appearances to list!) brought us up to date on the world news that is too true to print.

And once again, the LYNX LOUNGE pre-show mixer was a perfect way to start off the evening.

Gotham Comedy Club is located at 208 W 23rd Street (btwn 7 & 8th Aves).

Women's Summer Mixer

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Produced by FSIX & JPMorgan, Co-sponsored by OP.LYNX & LGBT Law Association of Greater New York

Another incredible night thanks to all who attended. Compliments to Kush for hosting us in their elegant space, and to all the participating promotional partners for getting the word out to the community. Stay tuned for future mixers...

NOTE: Apologies to all those who wandered for two blocks looking for 131 Chrystie. We listed the incorrect building number, but hopefully the crowd of women outside 191 Chrystie all evening was your beacon. In addition, the phrase "dancing upstairs and lounge below", which described the previous location, was not deleted as it should have been. Kush is a single floor space and there was not an inch of floor space to dance.

Quarterly OP.LYNX Filmmaker Brunch Series

Sunday, August 12, 2007

Sponsored by Subaru, Presented with NewFest

Thank you to all who spent the afternoon with us at the QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH. This was by far, our most well-attended film brunch, with a near capacity crowd. The diversity of programming was equally reflected in those who attended. Mohawks to floral dresses, film students to retired executives, and a few boys thrown into the mix made for a fun and engaging review of perspectives and expressions.

This month, we presented a collection of engaging, informative and funny shorts produced by, for and about women, including: Leah Meyerhoff's Team Queen is a gender-bending post-punk rock-n-roll prom dream; Laura Terruso's Castrato DiMatteo's Audition Tape is a queer take on an Italian-American family seen through the audition tape of an aspiring opera star; Love feels so foreign, until the day it decides to go fishing in Kelly Sebastian's a gIRL aND a gOLDFISH; in Black Men and Me, Michele Clarke explores her position as a Trinidadian dyke and her complex relationship with black masculinity; Lauryn Siegel brings us a short documentary on LGBT Homeless Youth; and Nyna Kennedy tantalized us her spoken word in "Verbal Sex: The Art of Nyna".

The Epicurean LYNX at La Palapa
(Garden) Dining Social for Women

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Thank you to all who took a culinary excursion south of the border with us to La Palapa at the second Epicurean LYNX Dining Social. It was a beautiful evening after the monsoon rains of the day prior. We enjoyed the samplings so much, we all were drawn to inquire about each other's dishes, knowing that many of us will be back to work our way through the extensive menu.

In case you are also tempted...

The cuisine is designed to show off the regional glories of Mexico rather than the familiar one-dimensional margarita-fueled, heavy, fatty dishes of Tex-Mex. Owners, Barbara Sibley and Margaritte Malfy are devoted to the art of complex flavor combinations based on traditional Mexican ingredients like the pungent herb epazote, avocado leaves, cactus pads and, of course, the many varieties of chilies, each with its own expression of flavor and heat.

La Palapa (East) is located at 77 Saint Mark's Place (btwn 1 & 2nd Aves) www.lapalapa.com

THE ENGAGEMENT

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Many thanks to those who enjoyed a night with us at THE ENGAGEMENT. Keep a look out during the year for announcements of future showings.

The fanfare wedding ceremony won't take place without a hitch, including an interfering brother-in-law who is a closet homophobe; an older sister disillusioned with marriage; the ex-girlfriend who left one woman for a man but will stop at nothing to win her back; and the best friend, a straight girl with abandonment issues -- or is she? Add to the mix a "holy war" over gay marriage rights between relatives and guests after the rehearsal dinner and you have ... THE ENGAGEMENT, a classic love triangle -- with a twist.

LEISURELY WITH LYNX: Walking Tour of
The East Village - Culture & Counterculture

Sunday, June 3, 2007

Thank you to all who decided to be a tourist for the day and take in some neighborhood history. The rain held off until the very end of our tour and we certainly got an encyclopedic account from Manhattan aficionado and history expert Joyce Gold.

Joyce Gold teaches New York history at New York University and the New School for Social Research. Joyce presented a visual tour of "THE IMMIGRANT, RADICAL, NOTORIOUS WOMEN OF WASHINGTON SQUARE" with OP at the Center to a near standing room only crowd in 2005. She leads a walking tour of this topic every March in celebration of Women's History Month. Leisurely with LYNX is already signed up! (www.nyctours.com)

HIGHLIGHTS: (top row, left to right) One of two sculptures depicting Native Americans at the St. Marks-on-the-Bowery Church (corner of 10th St & 2nd Ave) created by the same artist who designed Mt Rushmore; Mc Sorley's did not admit women, proudly stating "Good Ale, Raw Onions, and No Ladies" until 1970 (15 East 7th St); (bottom row, left to right) Joyce Gold beginning our tour in front of St. Marks-on-the-Bowery-Church, established 1795-99; facade on St. Mark's Pl btwn 2nd & 3rd Aves (next time you go for a walk, look up!); another landmarked facade, originally a German school of medicine, soon to become a luxury condo. Quarterly OP.LYNX Filmmaker Brunch Series

Sneak Preview of LOGO's
New lesbian reality series, CURL GIRLS

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Presented with NewFest

Thank you to all who spent their Sunday (Mother's Day) afternoon among like-minded women at the QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES. We previewed CURL GIRLS, a new reality series slated to air later this summer, which chronicles a summer of competition on the waves and life together on the shore.

Maureen Guthman, Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-productions for LOGO joined us in conversation with Kerry Weldon, Administrative Director of NewFest. Guthman generously answered questions from the audience and talked at great length about the intersection of storytelling and entertainment, in context with the under representation of lesbians in media. Whatever your opinion of what we've seen so far (hint, hint, The L Word), both Guthman and Weldon implore lesbian media-makers and media-makers-to-be to keep creating content - the avenues of acceptance and distribution are wide open!

LYNX LOUNGE / HOMO COMICUS 3:
Girls Gone Hilarious! Women's Night of Comedy

Wednesday, May 9, 2007

LYNX LOUNGE / Homo Comicus 3: Girls Gone Hilarious! did not disappoint!

Host ERIN FOLEY (pictured above far right) did her homework and come prepared with jokes just for us LYNXers in the house. JACKIE MONAHAN (2nd from left) ended her show with three hysterical impressions and left us wanting more. JULIE GOLDMAN (2nd from right) is one of our hometown faves, of course, and her roller coaster of unpredictable rage followed by spontaneous girly-girl cute factor and Jewish mom impressions had us in tears. MICHELE BALAN (left) is a force of funny all her own and we love her quintessential NYC humor.

The LYNX LOUNGE pre-show mixer was just that, a mix of new faces and old friends of every style and story.

LYNX Goes Strictly Ballroom with OUTdancing

Thursday, May 3, 2007

Thank you to the wonderful group of women who joined us at OUTdancing! The Mixer in the "Studio Bistro" was a nice way for everyone to meet each other and have a touch of wine before heading to the dance floor. Ironically, it was those who expressed that they were the most nervous, who were the ones who stole the show and seemed to be teaching the class by the end of the evening (you know who you are)!

Simone had her hands full with two adjacent studios teaching us her Salsa moves. Ernesto charmed us all with East Coast Swing. By 9pm, a few brave and energetic souls stayed for Tango.

American Folk Art Museum

Friday, April 20, 2007

Thank you to the wonderful mix of OP.LYNX members and friends who spent the early part of their Friday evening with us at the fabulous American Folk Art Museum. Tarrah Reynolds truly did fill the museum with her acoustic soul music. The nature of the tall layout of the museum allowed her music to travel to the highest floors. (www.myspace.com/misstarrah)

Some of you took in the free tour of current and ongoing exhibitions, including the works of Martin Ramirez (1895-1963), who created drawings of remarkable visual clarity and expressive power within the confines of DeWitt State Hospital in northern California, where he resided the last 15 years of his life.

SCREENING: "IN GOOD CONSCIENCE"
POST-SCREENING Q&A with Director BARBARA RICK

Sponsored by Subaru. Presented with NewFest

OP.LYNX presented the first in our QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES for 2007 sponsored by Subaru and presented in collaboration with NewFest, The New York Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

In Barbara Rick's acclaimed documentary, IN GOOD CONSCIENCE, a most unlikely and very funny rebel -- an American nun -- finds herself at the center of a human rights storm with leaders of one of the world's most revered institutions, the Roman Catholic Church. The film chronicles the true story of Sister Jeannine Gramick, who is defying a Vatican-issued ultimatum from both Cardinal Ratzinger and Pope John Paul II -- denounce homosexuality or lose everything.

Barbara Rick is president and founder of Out of The Blue Films, Inc., an independent documentary company dedicated to the creation of critically and commercially successful films that explore, articulate, and celebrate humanity. A Peabody and Emmy winning journalist/filmmaker for more than twenty years, Ms. Rick has produced, directed, and written a number of highly acclaimed films.

After the screening, the audience participated in a dialogue about issues presented in the film, and enjoyed asking Barbara Rick about how the story came together. We caught up on the status of Sister Jeanine Gramick's progress in her battle, and we encourage you to do the same. www.ingoodconscience.com

Launch of OP.LYNX Filmmaker Brunch Series

Sunday, November 12, 2006

Screening: "WOMEN IN LOVE"
Presented with NewFest

OP.LYNX launches a new NEW QUARTERLY FILMMAKER BRUNCH SERIES presented in collaboration with NewFest, the NY Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. The goal of the series is to create a space for women to make a day of socializing, networking and engaging in dialogue about issues related to our representation on film by lesbian underground filmmakers, as well as by media-makers in the mainstream.

On November 12th, Award-winning Filmmaker KAREN EVERETT ("I Shall Not Be Removed", "The Life of Marlon Riggs: MyFemme Divine"), gave us a no-holds-barred look at her sexually charged love life by revealing every juicy detail in "WOMEN IN LOVE" (59 min, 2005).

While examining the human ability to redefine ourselves and reshape what we think "love" means, Everett masterfully weaves images of lesbians making their way through present-day sex clubs and attending masturbation seminars. Everett's phenomenal fifth film is her finest -- a work of amazing depth and sincerity which is sure to captivate and entertain all curious audiences.

After the screening, KERRY WELDON, Filmmaker, NewFest Board Member (Director of Development for the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at the time), talked with KAREN EVERETT via video-conferencing from San Francisco about her film and the perspectives of polyamory in general.

Screening & Reception for
Filmmaker SU FRIEDRICH in conjunction
with her Mid-Career Retrospective at MoMA

Friday, September 29, 2006

OP.LYNX was honored to host a reception for avant garde, feminist filmmaker SU FRIEDRICH in conjunction with her mid-career retrospective, "The Personal Films of Su Friedrich," at the MUSEUM of MODERN ART.

After the screening, a group of about 30 OP/LYNXers took an evening walk to Uncle Nick's (one of NYC's best Greek restaurants), where we celebrated with Friedrich, her partner and guests.

Friedrich's films explore the worlds of lesbian adolescence and sexuality, women's adulthood and health, gender politics, and familial and societal relationships. The retrospective coincided with Outcast Films' DVD release of a five-volume, 13-title Su Friedrich film collection. www.outcast-films.com

OP.LYNX thanks author and lesbian icon, ALISON BECHDEL, for a very special peek into "Fun House", her critically acclaimed and deeply personal book about growing up in a funeral home with a closeted gay father. Special thanks to Holly Bemiss of Houghton Mifflin Company for her help in coordinating publicity for this special event, as well as OP Member Cathy Renna-McElrath for organizing the event and moderating.

Thank you to all who attended. We were overwhelmed by all the inquiries. The limited guest list of 100 was fully reserved in 3 days! Apologies to those who were unable to get updated information due to technical difficulties with the OP website.

The weather played in our favor and gave us a beautiful night for socializing. The private sixth-floor outdoor rooftop, graciously offered to us by Board Member, Carlene Mahanna, was the perfect backdrop for a showing of independent film clips from lesbian filmmakers.

A final, and VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to SUBARU for jumping in at the last minute to sponsor the evening. Their support of the lesbian community does not go unnoticed! Much appreciation to Moon City Productions for making this sponsorship possible.

Over 225 women joined us for Leo Bar's Shaken and Stirred -- Women's Night at Asia Society and Museum -- the night of May 19th. Many thanks go to Assistant Director of Corporate Relations, David Reid and Marketing Director, Ashley Eiler for their gracious invitation to enjoy mixing and mingling at one of Manhattan's most beautiful museums.

Many of you took in the guided tours of "A Passion for Asia: The Rockefeller Family Collects". The Rockefeller Collection -- ranging from sculpture to imperial porcelain and representing a geographic span from present-day Afghanistan to East and Southeast Asia -- is recognized around the world as one of the premier holdings of Asian art.

Just off the beaten path of Museum Mile, Asia Society and Museum consistently hosts unique and diverse collections of Asian art, from ancient treasures of Tibet to the modern marvels by Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who uses gunpowder as an artistic medium. You may have remembered or seen Guo-Qiang's "Light Cycle" explosion project which illuminated the sky over Central Park last year as part of the 150th anniversary celebration for Central Park.

LYNX LOUNGE / HOMO COMICUS 2:
Girls Gone Hilarious! Women's Night of Comedy

Wednesday, May 4, 2006

OP.LYNX's Second All-Female LYNX LOUNGE/Homo Comicus, "Girls Gone Hilarious!" had the sold-out crowd roaring with laughter! Thank you OP/LYNX Board Member Twilla Duncan and Bob Montgomery of Homo Comicus for your work in bringing some of the best talent in lesbian and lesbian-friendly comedy together in one great night.

Headliner VICKIE SHAW (pictured above left) -- who made a rare trip to NYC just for us -- was joined by comic diva, KIM CEA (2nd from left), laugh riot girrrl, JULIE GOLDMAN (2nd from right) and high priestess of hilarity MARION GRODIN (far left).

An unexpected delight was experiencing Gotham Comedy Club's new home at 208 W 23rd St. Just a few blocks from the old space and almost double in size at seating for 300, Gotham is a throwback to the elegance of texture, color and detailing of supper clubs and speakeasies of old. Those who came early, sipped cocktails and mingled in the lovely downstairs lounge.

LYNX LOUNGE
AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM

Friday, April 21, 2006

Co-Sponsored by GO NYC Magazine

Thank you to Katie Hush, Special Events Manager at American Folk Art Museum, and the museum staff for hosting a wonderful LYNX LOUNGE. For those of us who had been promising to visit the site, we finally got to experience the architectural delight that is the American Folk Art Museum.

Many of us took advantage of the guided tour through parts of the current exhibit of unique works from far points of the globe. The featured exhibit was "White on White (and a little gray)" which highlighted the vernacular American participation in the vogue for neoclassicism. The American Folk Art Museum holds a breathtaking collection of these textiles executed in a variety of techniques that have never been shown together. Also on view was a selection of Albany printworks, elaborate mourning needleworks stitched in shades of black on white silk to emulate line engravings and newsprint, and marble-dust.

American Folk Art Museum is located at 45 West 53rd St. www.folkartmuseum.org

COLD CALLING FOR WOMEN
A Workshop with Wendy Weiss

Thursday, April 20, 2006

Wendy Weiss, sales trainer, sales coach, author, speaker and undisputed "Queen of Cold Calling" presented COLD CALLING FOR WOMEN for OP/LYNX to an engaged audience. Chock full of great tips and advice for structured sales initiatives, Wendy kept us busy taking notes, asking lots of questions and walking through "what do I do when...?" scenarios.

Women have unique issues and strengths when it comes to cold calling and sales. How we perceive ourselves, how others perceive us, the societal norms of what is considered to be 'feminine' versus the proactive approach needed for sales, all come into play. Weiss culled from her book, "Cold Calling for Women", insights on how the way you think and the language that you use can impact your bottom line.

Wendy has been featured in BusinessWeek, Entrepreneur Magazine, Selling Power, Sales & Marketing Management and various other business and sales publications. Her clients include Avon Products, ADP, Sprint and thousands of entrepreneurs throughout the country. Sign up for Wendy's bi-monthly e-newsletter and find out about upcoming tele-seminars and speaking engagements. www.wendyweiss.com

"THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE"
Preview Reading

Monday, September 12, 2005

OP.LYNX, and Mind The Gap Theatre in association with GO Magazine and Fund for Reunion hosted a very special preview reading of the classic 1960's masterpiece, "THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE" written by Frank Marcus of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "The Dirty Dozen" fame.

Set in London, this ferociously funny black comedy centers around June Buckridge who plays the part of a District Nurse, Sister George (Barbara Rosenblat), on a wildly popular radio soap opera. Mercy Croft (Christine Rendel) is the show's decidedly un-merciful executive director and general "moral guidance" supervisor who also advises listeners on her popular broadcast program, "Agony Aunt". When she delivers news of the BBC's decision to kill off the Sister George character, June's temper explodes into one hilarious tirade after another. No one is safe in her lyrical war path, but neighbor, confidante and clairvoyant, Madame Xenia (Marilyn Bernard) offers to put a curse against the impending nemesis.

The frank and sultry depiction of June -- known to everyone as "George" -- as a foul-mouthed, cigar-smoking, booze-drinking, bra-swinging, unabashed lesbian makes SISTER GEORGE an important historical contribution to early queer theater. June's twisted rollicks with her "handy companion", Alice "Childe" McNaught (Polly Lee), earned the film version an X rating upon its initial release in 1967. That same year, Beryl Reid, as June, received a Tony Award for Best Actress in the Broadway version. SISTER GEORGE is a contextual gem for the shocker it was in its day. www.mindthegaptheatre.com

LYNX LOUNGE
WAAFRIKA Pre-performance Mixer

July 21, 2005

OP.LYNX enjoyed a pre-performance mixer and took in a moving performance of Waafrika, which was part of Fresh Fruit Festival 2005.

Waafrika, by Nanna Mwaluko, is set in a Kenyan village, where two women -- one white, one black -- fight to survive in a place where being gay is punishable by death. Written by African playwright Nanna Mwaluko, Waafrika brings us into a frightening terrain giving a deeper dimension to the international struggle for lesbian and gay civil rights, as well as our world and ourselves.
