‘GUARDIAN OF THE HARBOR,’ WALKING TOUR AND MIXER

OUT PROFESSIONALS’ NEXT SATURDAY ADVENTURE WHISKS YOU TO THE IDYLLIC URBAN OASIS OF GOVERNORS ISLAND.

On Saturday, August 6, begin your trip through time with a brief and breezy ferry ride from the tip of Manhattan to Governors Island, long off limits to New Yorkers.

purch-button-orange copy

Soon you’re nestled under a canopy of century-old trees, wandering among stately old brick buildings and enjoying camera-ready views of the Lower Manhattan skyline less than 1000 yards away.

In Dutch and British colonial times, Governors Island was pasture, timberland, game preserve and summer resort. For nearly two centuries after the American Revolution it served as guardian of the harbor and was in continuous military use.

Today it’s a National Monument, where well-tended lawns play host to Revolutionary War re-enactments and contemporary art installations. Governors Island parkland is undergoing a stunning reinvention by a Dutch landscape architect, Adriaan Geuze.

On Saturday, August 6, join Members and friends of Out Professionals … OP.LYNX, our dynamic women’s network… and representatives of our up-and-coming LGBT professionals, for “Guardian of the Harbor: The Walking Tour and Mixer.” Afterwards, unwind, socialize and network at Fraunces Tavern (1762), where Washington bid farewell to his officers.

Tour highlights include:

  • Castle Williams, a circular fort built in the years leading up to the War of 1812 to help protect New York City from naval attack
  • Spectacular, camera-worthy views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and New York’s harbor

Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Joyce teaches Manhattan history at New York University and the New School.

TOUR AN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM OF CAST-IRON ARCHITECTURE

OUT PROFESSIONALS WELCOMES YOU TO ’SOHO’S CAST IRON HISTORIC DISTRICT: THE WALKING TOUR AND MIXER.’

On Saturday, July 23, join Out Professionals Members and friends for a stroll through one of the world’s great open-air museums, the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District.

Enjoy a leisurely exploration of what was once an industrial wasteland of sweatshops known as Hell’s Hundred Acres — and is now, as the greatest collection of cast iron architecture in the world, a National Historic Landmark.

purch-button-orange copy

In the 1960s, SoHo began to attract artists such as Maya Lin, Claes Oldenburg and Yoko Ono, drawn by the cheap rents, great light and huge workspaces afforded by the areas’s neglected cast-iron buildings, which lined streets paved with Belgian blocks.

In 1962, author and activist Jane Jacobs (“The Death and Life of Great American Cities”) led a successful campaign to defeat the Lower Manhattan Expressway, a 10-lane elevated highway that Robert Moses proposed to blast through SoHo on Broome Street.

Come see what Jacobs saved! On Saturday, July 23, join Members and friends of Out Professionals … OP.LYNX, our dynamic women’s network … and a bunch of our up-and-coming LGBT professionals, for “SoHo’s Cast Iron Historic District: The Walking Tour and Mixer.”

Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Joyce teaches Manhattan history at New York University and the New School.

On this tour, you’ll learn the answers to such questions as:

  • Who was Puck, and why does our tour begin at his statue?
  • During the Civil War, why were Lord & Taylor and Tiffany in SoHo?
  • Where was America’s first African-American theater?
  • Who was John Jacob Astor, and why did he die in SoHo?
  • Why does one SoHo building look like a 19th-century sewing machine?
  • Who was murdered in a well on Spring Street?

WHO ARE THE ’SHADY LADIES’ WHO MERIT A SPOT AT THE MET?

OUT PROFESSIONALS PRESENTS ‘SHADY LADIES OF THE MET,’ EYE-OPENING TOURS WITH ANDREW LEAR.

On Saturday, July 16, Out Professionals offers OP Members and friends a choice of departures of “Shady Ladies of the Met Museum.”

These private, eye-opening tours are conducted by Classicist and art historian Andrew Lear. Your ticket includes admission to the Met’s galleries, bars and cafe until 8:30 p.m.

Purchase tickets for:

Sat., July 16, at 11 a.m.
Sat., July 16, at 2 p.m.

From Ancient Greek “hetaerae” to Sargent’s Madame X, the women Lear characterizes as “Shady Ladies” wielded untold influence as members of the political or cultural elites. They fascinated patrons and artists alike, from Praxiteles to Titian to Manet.

Who were these women? What were their stories? To find out, join Lear in a witty, provocative exploration of the lives and loves that lie behind the paintings.

  • Find evidence of the complex culture of high-end prostitution in the art of ancient Greece and Renaissance Italy.
  • Discover depictions of Venus in the Met’s permanent collection —and their relationship to ladies of the night
  • Learn about the officially unassailable role of the royal mistress in France and England.
  • Puzzle over the plenitude of prostitutes (high- and low-end) in French 19th century society and art.
  • See scandalous evidence in 19th century American art of the role of sexually powerful women.

Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia and NYU. He is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history. “Shady Ladies” is not an official Met offering.

THIS LE DÛ TASTING CLASS PITS FRANCE VS. CALIFORNIA

AWARD-WINNING SOMMELIER JEAN-LUC LE DÛ REFEREES A FACE-OFF BETWEEN OLD WORLD AND NEW WORLD WINES.

At this month’s edition of the Out Professionals Wine Club, the shop’s founder, James Beard Award-winning sommelier Jean-Luc Le Dû, referees a face-off between France and California, comparing wines and offering informed commentary on the results of their differing approaches to wine making.

Novice or connoisseur, you’ll take away a greater understanding of wine as you sample an expert’s selections.

The journey begins with a California sparkling wine, a Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs Brut 2011. Commentary then accompanies generous tastings of six competing wines:

Hanzell Sebella Chardonnay, Sonoma County 2013
Chablis Terroirs de Chablis, Patrick Piuze 2014
Bourgogne Rouge, Benjamin Leroux 2013
Poco a Poco Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2014
Chateau Lanessan, Haut-Medoc 2003
Hardin Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012

Each wine is paired with cheese and charcuterie from Murray’s Cheese Shop, a Village favorite for 75 years.

The evening is designed to offer ample time for relaxed networking with other Out Professionals Members and guests.

TOUR A CENTER OF NEW YORK’S CULTURE AND COUNTER-CULTURE

JOIN ANDREW LEAR ON AN OUT PROFESSIONALS TOUR OF THE EAST VILLAGE, HISTORIC HOME OF THE CITY’S CULTURE AND COUNTER-CULTURE.

On Saturday, June 11, historian Andrew Lear takes Members and friends of Out Professionals on a swing through the East Village — where the Beats lived, where Punk was born, and where Jonathan Larson set “Rent” in a world of impoverished young artists struggling in the shadow of AIDS.

Discover the unique role of the East Village in the cultural and counter-cultural history of New York City and the nation. Afterwards we adjourn to Pete’s Tavern (est. 1864), which remained open during Prohibition in the guise of a flower shop.

The East Village was home to such celebrated gay residents as Allen Ginsberg, Quentin Crisp and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It’s the site of Tompkins Square Park, where Wigstock was founded in 1984. And it spawned such notorious nightspots as Meow Mix and The Cock.

A hint of what you’ll learn this afternoon:

  • Where the famous photos of Oscar Wilde in velvet and furs were shot.
  • When and where the first “pansy” dances were held in New York.
  • Where Walt Whitman first read the “Calamus” poems to his Bohemian friends.
  • When an American poet first wrote openly about male-male love.
  • Where W. H. Auden wrote “lay your sleeping head, my love,/ human on my faithless arm”

Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia and NYU. He is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history.
