OUT PROFESSIONALS PRESENTS ‘TWO HOURS OF POWER,’ A SELF-DEFENSE DEMONSTRATION AND WORKSHOP WITH MARTIAL ARTS’ KATHY UNGER.

In an unforeseen emergency, when your skilled efforts at prevention and avoidance fail, will you be prepared with self-defense strategies and striking techniques? “Two Hours of Power” aims to help you trust your awareness, assess situations rapidly, and protect yourself.

With Kathy, you learn to recognize and respond to threatening behavior with strong, assertive body language and verbal self-defense skills. Role-playing and pad drills train you to strike with power, speed, and commitment.

This demonstration is open to all; comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear recommended.

Kathy Unger is a First Degree Black Belt in the Poekoelan system (Indonesian martial arts). Poekoelan employs fast, whip-like strikes and leverages biomechanics to gain advantage in fighting situations. Kathy has led seminars for Fortune 100 companies and educational institutions including American Express, Bank of America, NBC, NY Presbyterian Hospital, NYU and Baruch. She is also a certified personal trainer and Licensed Reiki Master Teacher.

COME WINDOW-HOPPING WITH OUT PROFESSIONALS ON A SPECIAL HOLIDAY TOUR DESIGNED FOR US BY WALK ABOUT NEW YORK.

On Saturday, December 3, Out Professionals invites you to relive the joys of holidays past at “Holiday Window-Hopping,” a spirited tour of the most storied of Midtown’s Christmas windows — original works of art soon to disappear.

This private tour is designed for us by Walk About New York. We begin at Lord & Taylor, the oldest luxury department store in North America. Then we’re off to Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel, Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, Van Cleef & Arpels, Barneys and Bloomingdale’s.

Afterwards, you’re welcome to unwind among new friends at Jacques Torres (“Mr. Chocolate”), 110 East 57th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues.

Some of the tour’s surprises:

  • Which technological advancement led to window shopping?
  • Which store puts its windows in place using hydraulic lifts?
  • Which popular toy began by livening up a window display?
  • Which well-known Christmas character got its start in a window?
  • Which artist inconceivably created windows for the late Bonwit Teller?

Tour Director Phil Desiere, founder of Walk About New York, is licensed by the city as a tour guide. In addition to conducting tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park and Greenwich Village, Phil developed OP’s new tour of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark.

HOW TO LEARN TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

OUT PROFESSIONALS PRESENTS ‘UNLEASHING YOUR INNER INNOVATOR,’ WITH ORGANIZATIONAL CONSULTANT YONATHAN FEFFER.

On Thursday, December 1, Out Professionals presents “Unleashing Your Inner Innovator,” a creative workshop on outside-the-box thinking featuring NYU Adjunct Professor Yonathan Feffer.

purch-button-orange copy

According to Feffer, an organizational consultant and executive coach, “You won’t find a business person who doesn’t claim to be for innovation. But in practice, creative thinking can appear disruptive and even risky — something to stifle instead of cultivate. It’s important that innovation be well managed if it’s to improve your bottom line.

“I’ve based this workshop on research into the management of creative thinking, and I’m including ready-to-use assessment tools. We will discuss — and experience — cognitive biases and blind spots, and group and organizational dynamics that limit creativity and hinder decision-making.”

A few of this workshop’s timely and provocative topics:

  • What constitutes innovation, and what are the five most common barriers to unleashing it?
  • What role can creative thinking play in increasing efficiency, uncovering new business opportunities, tackling complex business issues, and reimagining your career?
  • What are seven critical tools or techniques to enable you, your team, and your organization to maximize the potential for innovation?
  • What are three steps you can take immediately to break through barriers and unleash your own inner innovator?

Yonathan Feffer is an organizational consultant and executive coach. As a consultant and NYU Adjunct Professor, he focuses on such issues as team dynamics, organizational culture, effective communication, leadership and motivation, and employee engagement. Before earning his MBA from Columbia Business School, Feffer worked as a social entrepreneur, managing mission-driven organizations. He co-founded Israel’s gay youth organization (IGY) and played a leading role in designing and lobbying for the Tel Aviv LGBT Community Center – the only center of its kind in the Middle East.

OP GOES UNDERGROUND: SUBWAY ART TOUR AND MIXER!

OUT PROFESSIONALS’ SUBWAY ART TOUR AND MIXER IS DESIGNED FOR US BY WALK ABOUT NEW YORK.

On Saturday afternoon, November 12,  join Out Professionals on a private Subway Art Tour designed for us by Walk About New York. Following the tour, you’re welcome to unwind among new friends at a nearby watering hole.

purch-button-orange copy

With a single swipe of your MetroCard, travel from the eastern edge of Greenwich Village uptown to Central Park West and then back again to Chelsea. In between, have your eyes opened to a treasure trove of art that few New Yorkers take the time to notice — but that has been a distinguishing feature of our subway system since the first train set off from City Hall Station in 1904.

The artists’ preferred medium has always been glazed mosaic tile, characterized by its brilliance and durability. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s extensive art collection is managed by its Arts and Design department.

Subway art is not limited to station walls and passageways. Inside cars, vivid illustrations and a “Poetry in Motion” series engage passengers. Musicians and puppeteers perform in subway corridors and — to the dismay of many — on platforms and in subway cars.

Tour Director Phil Desiere, founder of Walk About New York, is licensed by the city as a tour guide. In addition to conducting tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park and Greenwich Village, Phil develops and leads tours of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark.

Timed for fall foliage and designed by Walk About New York, this unique tour highlights the resting places of noted gay men and lesbians, including:

And because today no career transformation is complete until it happens in the digital world too, John will discuss how to utilize digital marketing and social media.

  • Inspiration is the mother of invention; discover yours!
  • “Closed for Inventory” to meet someone important: You!
  • Hit the chessboard: Strategic engagement works wonders!
  • Start your engines! (Starting is the hardest step.)
  • “I object!” to your lack of “industry” background.
  • Your signature block can speak volumes.
  • Influencing with digital marketing tools — LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs and more!

LGBT TOUR OF THE MET MUSEUM SPOTLIGHTS ART UNIQUELY OURS

OUT PROFESSIONALS INVITES YOU TO ENJOY AN EYE-OPENING PRIVATE TOUR OF THE MET WITH ANDREW LEAR.

On Saturday, September 24, Out Professionals offers OP Members and friends a choice of departures of “Secrets of the Met,” a private tour of homoerotic treasures from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, conducted by Classicist and art historian Andrew Lear.

Tickets by pre-registration only; sorry, no walk-ins. Order below:

Sat. Sept. 24, at 11 a.m.
Sat. Sept. 24, at 2 p.m.

This OP tour explores some of the Met’s prized homoerotica, from ancient Greek nudes and erotic vase-painting to works from the Renaissance and the present day, many expressing same-gender desire. Famous artists and subjects appear, but so do lesser-known artists and works whose homoerotic charge is often ignored, including phallic totems from the Met’s Oceania collection.

Near “Portrait of a German Officer” (above right), a monumental painting by Marsden Hartley memorializing his lover, who died at 24, is “Gertrude Stein” (above left), a central figure in the Parisian art world, as painted by Pablo Picasso. And then there’s “The Horse Fair,” by the French artist Rosa Bonheur, who portrayed herself dressed as a man because women were barred from such events.

Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia and NYU. He is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history. For Lear’s insights on just one of the works included in our tour, visit The Gay and Lesbian Review. “Secrets of the Met” is not an official Met offering.
