TOUR THE CITY’S NEWEST CULTURAL DESTINATION

OUT PROFESSIONALS TOURS NEW YORK CITY’S DAZZLING NEW $4.5-BILLION ART MUSEUM — THE SECOND AVENUE SUBWAY.

On Saturday, September 16, join Out Professionals for a private tour of the new Second Avenue Subway’s remarkable art collection. With a single swipe of your MetroCard, experience the visual excitement created at a cost of $4.5 million, out of an overall budget of $4.45 billion.

blue-more-ticket-button-215w

From a pool of more than 300 high-profile applicants, the MTA Arts & Design public arts program assigned each of four artists a new or renewed station (63rd, 72nd, 86th or 96th Street) for a major installation.

Chuck Close. The celebrity photorealist created 12 “Subway Portraits,” each nearly nine feet high. Subjects include artists Cindy Sherman and Kara Walker, and musicians Lou Reed and Philip Glass.

Vik Muniz. The Brazilian-born, Brooklyn-based artist created “Perfect Strangers,” life-size mosaic portraits of real New Yorkers — a hand-holding gay couple, a mother with toddler and stroller, a subway saxophonist, a sari-wearing woman with cellphone.

Jean Shin transformed archival photos of the dismantling of the Second and Third Avenue elevated lines that served the Upper East Side until the 1940s and 1950s. “Elevated” turns these images into shimmering, partly transparent photographic murals in ceramic tile, glass mosaic and laminated glass.

Sarah Sze (pron. ZEE), who represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 2013, chose to create an environmental work of art. “Blueprint for a Landscape” lines walls with nearly 4300 brilliant porcelain tiles.

A hint of what you’ll learn on September 16:

  • Why have traditional subway tiles been abandoned?
  • Which stations have artist self-portraits?
  • What is the story behind the two men holding hands?
  • How are the artists’ images integrated into the walls?
  • What are the mottos used in the stations?

Phil Desiere, founder of Walk About New York, is licensed by the city as a tourist guide and is a member of the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). Besides conducting tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park and Greenwich Village, Phil develops and leads tours of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark.

‘GUARDIAN OF THE HARBOR,’ WALKING TOUR AND MIXER

OUT PROFESSIONALS’ MIDSUMMER ADVENTURE WHISKS YOU TO THE IDYLLIC URBAN OASIS OF GOVERNORS ISLAND.

On Saturday, August 19, begin your trip through time with a brief and breezy ferry ride from the tip of Manhattan to Governors Island, long off limits to New Yorkers.

purch-button-orange copy

Soon you’re nestled under a canopy of century-old trees, wandering among stately old brick buildings and enjoying Instagram-worthy views of the Lower Manhattan skyline less than 1000 yards away.

In Dutch and British colonial times, Governors Island was pasture, timberland, game preserve and summer resort. For nearly two centuries after the American Revolution it served as guardian of the harbor and was in continuous military use.

Today it’s a National Monument, where well-tended lawns play host to Revolutionary War re-enactments and contemporary art installations. Governors Island parkland is undergoing a stunning reinvention by a Dutch landscape architect, Adriaan Geuze.

On Saturday, August 19, join Members and friends of Out Professionals … OP.LYNX, our dynamic women’s network… and some of our up-and-coming LGBT professionals, for “Guardian of the Harbor: The Walking Tour and Mixer.” Afterwards, unwind, socialize and network at Fraunces Tavern (1762), where Washington bid farewell to his officers.

Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. August’s “Guardian of the Harbor” is an all-time favorite of hers and ours. Joyce teaches Manhattan history at New York University and the New School.

Tour highlights include:

  • Castle Williams, a circular fort built in the years leading up to the War of 1812 to help protect New York City from naval attack
  • Spectacular, Instagram-worthy views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and New York’s harbor

HOW TO ACHIEVE BUSINESS GOALS WITH ACTORS’ TOOLS.

OUT PROFESSIONALS PRESENTS ‘BUSINESS AS PERFORMANCE,’ AN INNOVATIVE CAREER WORKSHOP WITH YUVAL DAVID.

On Tuesday, August 15, Out Professionals invites you to take part in “Business as Performance,” an interactive workshop on personal branding and presentation skills, led by acclaimed actor Yuval David.

blue-more-ticket-button-215w

Using goal-oriented communication techniques developed during a career in film, television, theatre and voice-over work, Yuval aims to enhance self-awareness and build the self-confidence that comes with delivering a polished pitch or presentation.

When you see an actor deliver a message with conviction, each word and gesture is part of that message. Using the same skills actors use in performance, a business person can learn to demonstrate conviction, communicate sincerity, and be in-the-moment in changing scenarios.

By considering what your audience actually sees and hears, you gain a sense of which habits — vocal tone, gesture, weight shift, postural alignment — may fail to reinforce the impression you want to give.

Through exercises and games, you learn to enhance your communication skills by exploring the roles of voice and physicality. You learn how to focus on breathing techniques, projection and tonality, along with improving posture and gesture.

GARDEN PROFESSIONALS LEAD A TOUR OF VICTORIAN FLATBUSH.

LET OUT PROFESSIONALS WALK YOU THROUGH THE GORGEOUS GARDENS AND POSH PATIOS OF LATE-VICTORIAN FLATBUSH.

For many city dwellers, outdoor space means a shared rooftop, an enclosed courtyard or a tiny balcony hovering over a noisy street. Then there’s Victorian Flatbush!

Tag along with Out Professionals to discover the joys of wrap-around porches, secluded patios, lush gardens and expansive lawns surrounding rambling homes along quiet, tree-lined streets.

In visits to six diverse gardens, experts Susannah Laskaris and Holly Noury reveal to you how their neighbors have been able to indulge such a range of garden fantasies — formal English, naturalistic, city farmlet, Japanese, Mediterranean.

Afterwards, relax with a cool drink in the garden of the three-story Victorian home of Out Professionals Members Lance Tukell and Rob Seidel.

SCANDALS OF UPPER FIFTH, THE WALKING TOUR & MIXER

PRIVATE ARMIES, CRIMINAL INTENT, FINANCIAL SKULLDUGGERY: OUT PROFESSIONALS TAKES A WALK ON THE DARK SIDE OF FIFTH AVENUE’S GOLD COAST.

On Saturday afternoon, July 22, you are invited to join Members and friends of Out Professionals for an eyebrow-raising history tour, “Scandals of the Fifth Avenue Gold Coast.” Afterwards, tour goers may choose to stroll across Central Park and unwind at Tessa, the Upper West Side favorite.

purch-button-orange copy

In perhaps the Gilded Age’s greatest scandal, Gold Coast architect Stanford White, above left, dallied with showgirl Evelyn Nesbit, wife of millionaire Harry K. Thaw, right. Thaw gunned down White during the premiere of “Mam’zelle Champagne” at White’s rooftop theater on Madison Square.

The creation of Central Park in 1857 saw Upper Fifth Avenue become Millionaire’s Row. Tycoons long on cash and short on scruples built homes designed to project power, wealth and stature. Gilded Age mansions, including those of Henry Clay Frick and James B. Duke, began to line the Avenue.

Of course The American Dream had its dark side, and “Scandals of the Fifth Avenue Gold Coast” revels in the crimes and chicanery that built Millionaire’s Row.

Tour highlights include:

  • The Henry Clay Frick Mansion, built by a powerful financier and industrialist whom Andrew Carnegie called “The Man.” (Frick’s underground bowling alley survives.)
  • The James Buchanan Duke Mansion. Upon the death of American Tobacco’s “Buck” Duke, the mansion passed to his only child, gossip-column favorite Doris Duke.
  • Harkness House, built for Stephen V. Harkness, the silent but second-largest shareholder in Standard Oil, the combine that made John D. Rockefeller the world’s richest man.
  • Payne Whitney House, designed by Stanford White. Having seduced Nesbit, “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing,” White met his death at the hands of her young husband before he could see his masterpiece completed.

Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Joyce teaches Manhattan history at New York University and the New School.

ALL-NEW LGBT TOUR OF THE MET SPOTLIGHTS ART UNIQUELY OURS

OUT PROFESSIONALS LAUNCHES ‘FURTHER SECRETS OF THE MET,’ AN ALL-NEW EDITION OF OUR MUSEUM BLOCKBUSTER, WITH PROFESSOR ANDREW LEAR.

On Saturday, July 15, Out Professionals welcomes OP Members and friends to “Further Secrets of the Met,” an all-new edition of our earlier blockbuster tour, “Secrets of the Met.” Like its predecessor, this exploration of homoerotic treasures from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is conducted by Professor Andrew Lear.

purch-button-orange copy

“Further Secrets of the Met” highlights more intriguing examples of the museum’s choicest homoerotica, from ancient Greek nudes and erotic vase-painting to works from the Renaissance and the present day, many expressing same-gender desire. Famous artists and subjects appear, but so do lesser-known artists and works whose homoerotic charge can be easy to miss. Special treat: A look-in at “Irving Penn: Centennial,” featuring images of gay celebrities by the great American photographer.

Each of the paintings above contains a surprising secret.

  • Is this maiden really a maiden?
  • Is this Renaissance gentleman vamping?
  • How did this glamorous actress make her husband unhappy?

During this all-new, two-hour private tour, you learn the answers to those and other intriguing questions:

  • Why are the penises of Greek statues undersized?
  • Why do lace and feathers adorn male aristocrats? Were these men really straight?
  • Why is Sappho shown seizing her breast?

For Lear’s peerless insights on just one of the works in the Met’s unrivaled collection, visit The Gay and Lesbian Review.

A four-time winner of the Harvard Certificate for Excellence in Teaching, Professor Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia and NYU. Lear is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history, and the winner of the Travel Industry’s 2016 Travvy Award for best escorted tour operator, LGBT; and the Luxury Travel Guide’s 2016 LGBT Tour Operator of the Year.

‘UNCOVERING HIDDEN HISTORY,’ AT LENDLEASE, IN METLIFE BUILDING

OUT PROFESSIONALS INVITES YOU TO TOAST THE CREATOR OF OUTGOING, AN INTERACTIVE MAP OF HISTORIC LGBT NIGHTSPOTS, AT THE NEW YORK OFFICES OF LENDLEASE.

On Tuesday, June 20, Out Professionals welcomes Jeff Ferzoco, creator of OUTgoing, an interactive project to record and map an essential and endangered element of gay history — LGBT nightspots. Join us for cocktails, networking and a fascinating program at the New York offices of Lendlease, in the MetLife Building.

purch-button-orange copy

According to Sarah M. Kaufman, Digital Manager of NYU’s Rudin Center, OUTgoing’s map was developed by pulling data from historical works and old guidebooks, as well from anecdotes and verified crowdsourcing. The impressive result constitutes an interactive map of LGBT nightspots since the 19th century.

CityLab’s Sarah Goodyear reports that Ferzoco’s research uncovered revealing patterns. In his initial pass, Jeff found records of dozens of gay nightspots between 1931 and 1960. That number surged to over 300 between 1961 and 1990, dropping slowly between 1991 and 2010 to stand today at about 100. These numbers reflect the complex history of the closet, the sexual revolution, the AIDS epidemic, and the mainstreaming of queer culture.

Tonight, Jeff supplies answers to questions like these:

  • Where and when was the first recorded gay bar in NYC?
  • Which bar has operated under the greatest number of different names?
  • Which outer borough has had the most gay bars over time?
  • What was the first gay bar to open in Hell’s Kitchen after 2000?
  • Where are potentially gay neighborhoods beginning to develop?

Romance is what Jeff believes will keep gay bars alive. “I think people deny how much they really like meeting at bars,” he says. “It’s all about serendipity, timing, a little fear and a little excitement. I think the bars are going to remain, and that cruising will remain, as fatigue of the apps sets in.”
Jeff Ferzoco, a designer and cartographer, works at CARTO, a mapping software startup in Bushwick. He teaches spatial thinking at Pratt, has taught urban data storytelling at Columbia, and is an organizer for GeoNYC, the largest geo-meetup in the U.S. On June 20, Jeff can show you how to begin mapping your own personal data.

Special thanks to event sponsor Lendlease and its LGBTIA Employee Resource Group. A leading international property and infrastructure provider for over 55 years, Lendlease is engaged in three major development projects in gateway cities across the U.S. In Australia, Lendlease is currently developing Barangaroo, the largest such project in Sydney’s history.
