NEW! OUR 2-4-1 WALKING MIXER, ‘8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD’

‘THE ROMANCE OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE,’ LATEST IN THE OUT PROFESSIONALS SERIES OF SATURDAY ADVENTURES.

Since 1883, the granite towers and steel cables of the Brooklyn Bridge have been recognized the world over as an icon of New York City. Once dubbed “the eighth wonder of the world” and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the bridge still inspires awe for its engineering, its beauty, and the views from its raised wooden walkway.

On Saturday, July 19, Out Professionals makes the bridge the centerpiece of a two-for-one walking tour and mixer. Bring a guest, free! Afterwards, network, socialize or just unwind among new friends at Superfine in DUMBO, Brooklyn’s celebrated weekend destination.

The Brooklyn Bridge has been featured in such films as Woody Allen’s romantic comedy “Annie Hall” and Martin Scorsese’s brutal epic of mid-19th-century Manhattan, “Gangs of New York.” Lately love-struck visitors have been festooning it with padlocks bearing their names, throwing the keys into the East River.

Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Joyce teaches New York history at New York University and the New School.

Highlights of her Brooklyn Bridge tour include:

  • The engrossing saga of the site, design and construction of the bridge.
  • Spectacular views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and New York’s harbor.
  • The inaugural section of Brooklyn Bridge Park, soon to encompass 1.2 miles of the waterfront.

AUTHOR SUZANNA WALTERS ON ‘THE TOLERANCE TRAP’

HAS AMERICA BECOME POST-GAY? OR IS THE NEW TOLERANCE A TRAP? HEAR SUZANNA WALTERS IN CONVERSATION WITH ERIC MARCUS AT NYU’S KING JUAN CARLOS CENTER.

On Wednesday June 4, Out Professionals … OP.LYNX, our dynamic women’s network … and OP.PRIME, the network for up-and-coming LGBT professionals, invite you to a Pre-Pride Book Party at NYU’s King Juan Carlos Center on Washington Square. After a stimulating conversation with author and journalist Eric Marcus, Suzanna Walters, author of “The Tolerance Trap” (NYU Press, June 3) invites us to a private Media Party.

The reigning national story is that a new era of rainbow acceptance is at hand. But same-sex marriage is still unrecognized and unpopular in the vast majority of states. Hate crimes and anti-gay laws proliferate, and ENDA still cannot make it through Congress. Even in the “gay friendly” world of Hollywood and celebrity culture, precious few stars are openly gay and “coming out” still creates a media frenzy.

In “The Tolerance Trap: How God, Genes, and Good Intentions are Sabotaging Gay Equality,” Suzanna Walters argues that we are not “almost there,” but instead may be settling for a watered-down goal of tolerance and acceptance rather than a robust claim to full civil rights. She challenges both “born this way” story lines, which root civil rights in biology, and “God made me this way” arguments, which similarly situate sexuality as innate and impervious to decisions we make to shape it. Tolerance is a trap — not the end goal but a dead end that undermines the quest for real freedom.

Michael Cunningham (“The Hours”) agrees: “Finally a writer and critical thinker has treated queerness with true insight, and proper respect for its complexities and contradictions. Thank you, Suzanna Walters, for bringing so much rigor and balance; such ardent, subtle questioning; such respect for genuine human rights to the horrifically over-simplified term, ‘tolerance.’”

Suzanna Danuta Walters writes and lectures extensively on sexuality, popular culture and feminism and is currently Director of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Professor of Sociology at Boston’s Northeastern University. Her books include “All the Rage: The Story of Gay Visibility in America” and “Material Girls.”

Eric Marcus is the author of several books, including “Making Gay History” and “Why Suicide?” He is co-author of “Breaking the Surface,” the #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography of Olympic Diving champion Greg Louganis, and co-author, as well, of “Coming Out To Play,” the autobiography of Major League Soccer player Robbie Rogers (Penguin Books, November). Eric was recently appointed Senior Director for Loss and Bereavement Programs for the American Society for Suicide Prevention.

THE REAL ‘GANGS OF NEW YORK,’ AN OP WALKING TOUR AND MIXER

OUT PROFESSIONALS CONTINUES ITS POPULAR SERIES OF AFTERNOON ADVENTURES WITH ‘HISTORIC FIVE POINTS,’ SCENE OF SCORSESE’S ‘GANGS OF NEW YORK.’

On Saturday, May 3, Out Professionals invites you to tour Five Points, where filmmaker Martin Scorsese set his brutal epic of mid-19th-century Manhattan, “Gangs of New York.” After an insider’s tour of this once-notorious neighborhood, you’re welcome to unwind among new friends at Forlini’s, an Italian classic familiar to audiences of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Just east of today’s City Hall and Municipal Building and home to the immigrant working class, Five Points was a disease-ridden hotbed of violence, gang wars, poverty and corruption. Our tour evokes such scenes of notoriety as Paradise Square, Cow Bay, Bottle Alley, and gangs with such names as the Roach Guards, the Plug Uglies and the Dead Rabbits.

Highlights of our tour include:

•  The originals of characters created on screen by Leonardo DiCaprio (Amsterdam), Daniel Day-Lewis (Bill the Butcher), Liam Neeson (Priest Vallon).
•  The varied roles of celebrated visitors to Five Points: Davy Crockett, Charles Dickens, Abraham Lincoln.

•  Success story of the Five Points native Al Smith: Tammany Hall protege, state governor, presidential candidate.
•  A visit to the oldest Jewish graveyard in North America.

•  The only Roman Catholic church with a proud Anglican, Cuban, Irish, Italian, Chinese and Buddhist history.

THE SERIES CONTINUES. Out Professionals’ private Walking Tour/Mixer series is designed for us — and you — by Joyce Gold History Tours of New York. Our series continues on Saturday, June 14, with “Heiresses, Immigrants and Radicals: The Notorious Women of Washington Square,” expected to exert a special appeal to members and friends of OP.LYNX, our dynamic women’s network.

WHERE
The neighborhood formerly known as Five Points is now split between the Civic Center on the west and south and Chinatown on the east and north. Five Points and Forlini’s are both convenient to Canal Street subway stations.

WHAT’S UP
Tour begins at 2 p.m. sharp, rain or shine. We meet at the northwest corner of Bayard Street and The Bowery, at Bank of America. Be sure to allow adequate walking time from subway to starting point. THINK LIKE A GLOBAL CEO

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS ARE INVITED TO LEARN A HARVARD MBA’S SECRETS TO FASTER AND SMARTER GROWTH.

Are your dreams bigger than your business experience? On Tuesday, August 13, Out Professionals presents an interactive Business Growth Workshop with Evan Horowitz, a Harvard MBA and founder of Evan Horowitz Advising.

You’re awesome at what you do, and you’ve built a successful business around it. But you’re not a business person by training, and you’re “winging it” on the business side of things. As a result, it’s stressful, with time always short, and cash-flow always unpredictable.

Evan wants to help you stop reinventing the wheel and start thinking like a CEO. Let him teach you the fundamentals of growing a company in the fastest and smartest way.

Are you tired of working like crazy, constantly fighting fires, and yet not reaching the level of success you dream about? Let Evan show you the top three secrets of successful CEOs. With interactive training and Evan’s CEO Workbook, you’ll begin to apply those secrets to your business even before leaving the workshop, and catapult your business forward.

Don’t miss this chance to create an action plan toward becoming a better CEO!
