OSCAR WILDE TOURS INVITES OUT PROFESSIONALS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS ON A PRIDE-TIME TOUR OF THE HISTORIC WEST VILLAGE.

On Saturday, June 10, Members and friends of Out Professionals celebrate Pride by exploring the West Village, historic home of LGBT culture and counter-culture. Today’s walking tour and mixer is led by Professor Andrew Lear, founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history.

On this Pride-time history walk, you discover where legendary LGBT achievers — including Bernice Abbott, Merce Cunningham, Herman Melville and Eleanor Roosevelt — have lived, worked and loved.

The West Village is famed as the home of gathering places with gay history, including Off Broadway’s Cherry Lane Theater and the former speakeasy Chumley’s, closed for a decade and only recently reopened as an upscale restaurant.

  • Visit the scene of the Sip In, an early gay rights protest
  • Enter gay New York’s most famous bathroom
  • Visit the city’s new AIDS memorial
  • See where James Baldwin wrote “Giovanni’s Room”
  • Hear the story behind New York’s narrowest house — and the bisexual woman poet who lived there

Afterwards we adjourn to Julius’, a haunt of Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams.

Andrew Lear is a renowned expert on the history of sexuality. A beloved teacher at Harvard, Columbia and NYU, Professor Lear won the Harvard Certificate for Excellence in Teaching four times. He has taught history, art history, and gender studies. Lear is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history and the winner of several major prizes, including the Travel Industry’s 2016 Travvy Award for best escorted tour operator, LGBT; and the Luxury Travel Guide’s 2016 LGBT Tour Operator of the Year.
