OUT PROFESSIONALS’ EYE-OPENING NEW SUBWAY ART TOUR — DESIGNED FOR OP.LYNX BY WALK ABOUT NEW YORK.
On Saturday afternoon, November 3, join Members and friends of OP.LYNX, Out Professionals’ dynamic women’s network, on a Subway Art Tour newly designed for us by Walk About New York.
With a single swipe of your MetroCard, travel from Hudson Yards to Harlem, ending at Grand Central Terminal. In between, examine important art at 10 different stations, including monumental works by three different women artists. Following the tour, mix it up and network at a nearby gathering spot!
Discover an eye-opening treasure trove of art that few New Yorkers take the time to notice — but that has been a distinguishing feature of our subway system since the first train set off from City Hall Station in 1904.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s extensive art collection is managed by its Arts and Design department.
Characterized by brilliance and durability, glazed mosaic tile has traditionally been the favorite medium of subway artists.
- Where is the first artwork commissioned by the MTA?
- Which woman’s poetry is included in subway art?
- How are gold mosaic tiles produced?
- Whose artwork could be seen inside subway cars AND on a subway platform?
- Why are 45RPM records included in one mosaic mural?
Subway art is not limited to station walls and passageways. Inside cars, vivid illustrations and the 25-year-old Poetry in Motion series engage passengers. Musicians and puppeteers perform in subway corridors and — to the dismay of many — on platforms and in subway cars.
Tour Director Phil Desiere, founder of Walk About New York, is licensed by the city as a tour guide. In addition to conducting tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park and Greenwich Village, Phil develops and leads tours of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark.
A three-hour private Subway Art Tour with Phil Desiere. Tour takes place rain or shine, involves stairs, and begins with a swipe of your MetroCard at 2 p.m. sharp. Open-ended mixer to follow; refreshments on your own.
