‘ANTIQUES ROADSHOW’ MEETS ‘THE MOTH’ AS OUT PROFESSIONALS INTRODUCES AN OBJECT-INSPIRED, INTERACTIVE EVENT.

On Thursday, March 16, Out Professionals presents “Show&Tale: Coming-Out Mementos and Stories,” an object-prompted event guided by Personal Historian Martie McNabb (shown). According to Martie, “Show&Tale is like Antiques Roadshow meets The Moth — or your favorite Pinterest board come to life!”

For a majority of the members of the LGBT community, coming out constituted one of life’s most significant events. What did it mean to you? The act of coming out to yourself or to others? Awakening to a role as an activist?

In Martie’s experience, you probably still cherish a coming-out memento — a particular object, document or photo that plays a nostalgic role in your story.

  • Did you find a suffragette sash in your great-grandmother’s attic?
  • A faded photo of your great uncle, a confirmed bachelor, in drag?
  • A clipping showing a relative participating in the early fight for civil rights?
  • A photo of you and your friends in ACT-UP, demonstrating for AIDS funding?

Welcome to an interactive evening featuring guided sharing of coming-out stories of all kinds. You’ll learn more about yourself while connecting with other professionals as we share the stories that helped make us who we are today.

No need to practice. Everyone is welcome to share. Three-minute time limit. No judges, no prizes, no competition. You’d just like to come and listen? Awesome! Observers welcome.

Personal Historian Martie McNabb has been haunted by all the vivid life stories that get shoved into a box, a bag, or a suitcase. Her business, Memories Out of the Box, reclaims an owner’s photos, documents and memorabilia and turns them into a visual narrative of a unique life.
