ROAM VILLAGE STOMPING GROUNDS ON THIS OUT PROFESSIONALS TOUR OF HISTORIC LGBT BARS, LOUNGES, SPEAKEASIES AND CLUBS.

On Saturday, June 3, Out Professionals repeats its sold-out exploration of the West Village — “Bar Wars: The Walking Tour and Mixer.” Rescheduled from May 13 because of a threatened Nor’easter, this is a camera-worthy tour of LGBT history as played out in sometimes notorious speakeasies, bars and clubs.

For decades bar culture has loomed large in the gay community. During this three-hour pub crawl, learn why bars have played such an outsized role in gay life. Join us for the opportunity to tip back our glasses at four special gay/lesbian bars, during an entertaining tour of Manhattan’s most storied neighborhood.

  • What can veterans of Ty’s, Stonewall and Julius’ tell us about gay bar culture’s place in history?
  • Who was the woman who opened the first lesbian nightclub? How has she been immortalized?
  • Why did Village waterfront bars welcome the rougher side of gay life?
  • Which New York hospital was at the forefront of AIDS treatment? How is that hospital remembered today?
  • What is the biggest threat to today’s gay bar culture?

Tour director Phil Desiere, founder of Walk About New York, is licensed by the city as a tour guide. In addition to tours of such quintessential spots as Central Park, Phil develops and leads tours of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark. Today’s tour originated in conjunction with the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
