THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT
DISCOVER ARCHITECTURAL GEMS OF THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT ON OUT PROFESSIONALS’ NEWEST WALKING TOUR AND MIXER.
On Saturday, April 16, the Members of OP.LYNX, Out Professionals’ dynamic women’s network, invite you to begin a memorable trip through time at Bowling Green, the oldest public park in New York City, still surrounded by its original 18th-century fence.
Here, where Native American tribes had gathered in council, thousands marched in support of labor rights, women agitated for the vote, John D. Rockefeller ran an oil empire, and people booked transatlantic passage on the steamships of the Cunard Line.
“Historic Bowling Green: The Walking Tour and Mixer” captures New York City’s role in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the center of ocean travel, trade and commerce, world-transforming inventions, and political activism.
On Out Professionals’ first walking tour of spring you encounter styles ranging from neo-Renaissance splendor to Art Deco pizzazz, and view gorgeous mosaics and other decorative elements that are both perfect symbols of their times and enduring works of art. Afterwards, kick back and relax with new friends at Ulysses’ Folk House, a welcoming nearby watering hole.
This private walking tour/mixer has been designed for us — and you — by journalist Susan DeMark, the creator of Mindful Walker, a project that focuses on the experience of architecture, history, street life and nature. You’ll gain not only a renewed appreciation of this storied part of New York but also a heightened sense of the works of art in our midst each day.
Tour highlights include:
- The site where seven suffragists took their cause to the Financial District in 1908, only to be confronted by New York City police.
- The Broadway building where hundreds of family and friends congregated to learn the fate of the passengers on the Titanic.
- The astonishing sculptures, architectural motifs and murals that document the area’s history as Steamship Row.
- An Art Deco skyscraper built in the depths of the Depression that earned local craftsmen awards for its dazzling mosaics and sculpture.
